1. Seen in today's terms, the Ikhwan resembled the Taliban in their greater purity and extremism and Abdul-Aziz resembled his sons who continue to rule the less pure kingdom he founded. His victory in 1930 meant that a milder version of Wahhabism defeated the more fanatical version. If the Saudi monarchy has always been more rigorously Islamic than its neighbours, it has also been lax by the earlier standards of the Wahhabi doctrine.
   आज की परिस्थितियों में देखा जाये तो तालिबान शुद्धिवादी और कट्टरता के मामले में इखवान के समान है जबकि अब्दुल अजीज के पुत्रों की स्थिति अजीज जैसी है जो कम शुद्ध राज्य पर शासन कर रहे हैं. 1930 में उनकी विजय का अर्थ था कट्टरपंथी वहाबियों पर नरमपंथियों की विजय. यदि सउदी राजशाही अपने पड़ोसियों की अपेक्षा अधिक कठोर इस्लामी होता तो यह आरम्भिक वहाबी सिद्धान्त से कम ही होता.
2. The Ikhwan approach to Islam did not die in 1930, however. It retreated and maintained a hold over rearguard elements. As the Saudi monarchy blossomed in the oil age into an ever more inflated and hypocritical institution, the appeal of the Ikhwan message gained ground. This purist appeal first reached world attention in 1979, when an Ikhwan-like group of youths overtook the Grand Mosque in Mecca and held it for two weeks. The same Ikhwan-like approach emerged in Saudi-sponsored Mujaheddin efforts to push the Soviet Union out of Afghanistan in 1979-89. The Taliban regime embodied this approach during its five years in power, until the US-led war brought it down in 2001.
   तो भी 1930 में इखवान की पहुँच समाप्त नहीं हुई इसने बचे हुये लोगों पर पुन: नियन्त्रण स्थापित किया . तेल युग में जब सउदी राजशाही फली-फूली और आडम्बरपूर्ण संस्थाओं में बदल गई तो इखवान का संदेश प्रभावी होने लगा. यह शुद्धिवादी अपील 1979 में पहली बार विश्वव्यापी हुई जब इखवान जैसे युवकों के गुट ने मक्का की भव्य मस्जिद पर नियन्त्रण कर दो सप्ताह तक इसे अपने नियन्त्रण में रखा. इसी प्रकार 1979-89 में अफगानिस्तान से सोवियत यूनियन को बाहर करने के सउदी प्रायोजित मुजाहिदीन प्रयासों से इखवान की पहुँच फिर उभरी. 2001 में अमेरिका नीत युद्ध में पराजित होने तक तालिबान ने अपने पाँच वर्ष के इसी आधार को अपनाया.
