   उसने मकान का दरवाज़ा एक मोटी चाभी से खोल दिया और उसका हाथ पकड़कर अँधेरी सीढ़ियों पर चढ़ने लगा । पहली मंजिल पर आकर उसके पाँव रुक गए । एक छोटी - सी चाभी ताले में खड़खड़ाई और दरवाज़ा खुल गया । बासी हवा से भरा एक छोटा - सा अँधेरा कमरा तम्बाकू और फफूंद का भभका उनकी साँसों से आ टकराया ।
