महाभारत में एक कथा आती है कि जब देवताओं ने तराजू के एक पासे में चारों वेदों को रखा और दूसरे पर भारत ग्रंथ को रखा तो भारत ग्रंथ सभी वेदों की तुलना में सबसे अधिक भारी सिद्ध हुआ अतः भारत ग्रंथ की इस महता (महानता) को देखकर देवताओं और ऋषियों ने इसे महाभारत नाम दिया और इस कथा के कारण मनुष्यों में भी यह काव्य महाभारत के नाम से सबसे अधिक प्रसिद्ध हुआ। - A story in the Mahabharata states that once upon a time, when the four Holy Vedas were weighed using a weighing scale against the “”Epic Poem Bharata“” by the gods, the “”Bharata epic“” outweighed the four Holy Vedas, therefore, having seen the greatness of this epic poem, the Gods and the sages named this book the Mahabharata and so even among the humans this epic poem became popularly known as the Mahabharata.
