The edict led to physical attacks on bookstores in Italy, Norway, and the United States and on translators of The Satanic Verses in Norway, Japan, and Turkey; in the last case, the translator and 36 others perished in an arson attack on a hotel. Other violence in Muslim-majority countries led to more than 20 fatalities, mostly in South Asia. Then, just as the furor wound down, in June 1989, Khomeini died; his death made the edict, sometimes inaccurately called a fatwa , immutable .

9. Dec. 21, 2011 update : Well that did not take long . From a New York Times report: “”Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki of Iraq threatened on Wednesday [Dec. 21] to abandon an American-backed power-sharing government created a year ago, throwing a fragile democracy into further turmoil just after the departure of American troops and potentially tarnishing what has been cast as a major foreign policy achievement for President Obama.” It remains to be seen how much of a role the Iranian regime played in instigating this disruptive step.    निष्कर्ष यह है कि खोमेनी और ओबामा दोनों एक दूसरे के लिये समस्यायें खडी कर सकते हैं। यदि ऐसा होता है तो ईरान और इराक राष्ट्रपति चुनाव में आवश्यकता से अधिक बडी भूमिका निभायेंगे और तीस वर्षों से अमेरिकी राजनीति के लिये एक समस्याग्रस्त शिशु की इनकी भूमिका जारी रहेगी।
