1. Thousands of Iraqi Shi'ites chanted “No to America, No to Saddam, Yes to Islam” a few days ago, during pilgrimage rites at the holy city of Karbala. Increasing numbers of Iraqis appear to agree with these sentiments. They have ominous implications for the coalition forces.
   कुछ दिनों पहले कर्बला के पवित्र शहर में तीर्थ यात्रा के कर्मकाण्ड के दौरान हजारों शियाओं ने नारे लगाये ‘अमेरिका को ना, सद्दाम को ना और इस्लाम को हाँ ''। इस भावना का समर्थन करने वाले इराकियों की संख्या बढ़ रही है। इसका गठबन्धन सेना पर बड़ा प्रभाव होने वाला है।
2. Two factors in particular made me expect Iraqi resistance. First, the quick war of 2003 focused on overturning a hated tyrant so that, when it was over, Iraqis felt liberated, not defeated. Accordingly, the common assumption that Iraq resembled the Germany and Japan of 1945 was wrong. Those two countries had been destroyed through years of all-out carnage, leading them to acquiesce to the post-war overhaul of their societies and cultures. Iraq, in contrast, emerged almost without damage from brief hostilities and Iraqis do not feel they must accept guidance from the occupation forces. Rather, they immediately showed a determination to shape their country's future.
   इराक में वर्तमान विद्रोह को एक वर्ष पहले से ही देखा जा सकता था. अप्रैल 2003 में ही मेरे ध्यान में आया था कि पवित्र शहर कर्बला की तीर्थयात्रा के दौरान हजारों इराकी शियाओं ने नारे लगाये ‘अमेरिका नहीं सद्दाम नहीं केवल इस्लाम'. इन भावनाओं के साथ सहमत होने वाले इराकियों की संख्या बढ़ती जा रही है. गठबन्धन सेना के लिये इसके अच्छे परिणाम नहीं होने वाले हैं.
