   अभी हाल में इजरायल ने संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघ में एक प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत कर दो वर्ष के लिए सुरक्षा परिषद् की सदस्यता की उम्मीदवारी जताई तथा महासभा में बोलने के लिए इसके प्रधानमंत्री का गर्मजोशी से स्वागत किया गया . वैसे तो 190 देशों के इस संगठन में किसी भी देश के लिए यह आम बात है लेकिन इजरायल के संबंध में ऐसा पहली बार है कि जब इस देश ने प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत किया है तथा सुरक्षा परिषद् की सदस्यता के अनुरोध पर अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है कि संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघ में इजरायल के विरुद्ध ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से विरोध का जो वातावरण चला आ रहा था वह समाप्त हो गया है . 15 सितंबर को महासभा में एरियल शेरोन द्वारा दिया गया भाषण संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ में उनका पहला भाषण था . यह भाषण उस विशाल कक्ष में दिया गया था जो उनके देश की निंदा से भरा रहता था जहां उनकी निंदा के प्रस्ताव पारित होते थे तथा इजरायल के लोगों के बोलने पर अरब प्रतिनिधि अपनी सीटें छोड़कर उठ जाते थे.
