byroads in a sentence

I now realize that when I choose to leave the four-lane and venture onto a Pennsylvania byroad that narrows to one lane beneath a railroad overpass because a creek is using what would be the other lane of pavement, I am choosing to temporarily adapt myself to a pace of life that disappeared in most areas after World War II, or maybe after World War I.
